Bird Homestead golf report: How many chip offs were taken on Men’s Night?

Although nobody wants to hear it, every day we are getting closer and closer to the end of summer. Don’t forget to find time to come out to Bird Homestead to play a round of golf. Tom Walsh has been doing an amazing job on the greens. It is safe to say this year is one of the best years for the condition of our greens, since the course opened. You would think you were playing in a country club with the condition of the course. Come out and see for yourself.

Men’s night

There were 30 guys on Tuesday for men’s night. Long drive was on hole No. 9 and Jeff Gillman was able to keep it in the fairway while crushing it, winning him long drive. Aaron Blackburn was on fire for the night, not only did he get a pure birdie on Hole No. 2, he also landed only 34 feet, 2 inches, from the green on No. 6, winning closest to. Rob Robertson also had a nice par-3 shot on hole No. 8. He landed only 23 feet, 3 inches, from the pin, winning him closest to on No. 8.

With 30 men for men’s night, of course there was an infamous chip off, this week a three-way tie for third. This chip off was probably one of the most embarrassing chip offs in the history of Bird Homestead tie breaker chip offs. It took the three teams of three men each a complete three rounds of chipping to hit the green. Yes, after nine chips the first time around, and nine chips the second time around no one hit the green, so they had to all chip for a third time. P.Z. beat out Roy Bird to take his team to third.

In first place was Greg Harrington, Chris Hafer and J.E. Wells. In second was Mike Gardner, Ryan Ellis and Cliff Hoff, and third was P.Z., Rob Robertson and James Kozel. Men’s night is every Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.

Ladies night

Although it poured down rain, we had a few ladies show up for ladies night, as we were waiting in the clubhouse to start, we were listening and watching the rain pour down. After a few minutes of debating, we decided to stay inside and stay dry, instead of swim while golfing. We figured it was our turn on Wednesday night to have an ugly night, since we lucked out the past few weeks and had beautiful weather, as the men on Tuesdays got the ugly weather.

We love to see new golfers for men’s night and ladies night every week.

Upcoming tournaments

The skills tournament is this Saturday, August 8, at 12 p.m. This FUN tournament is a very even competition with several events, using handicap to level the playing field on some events. Don’t let the title “skills tournament” deter you. There is a reason we have handicaps in golf. There is a potluck and association meeting immediately following the tournament.

Fun Fact Thursday

There are 17,672 golf courses in the U.S., Florida having the most with over 1,300, and yes Alaska has the least with less than 50 courses.
