Birch Ridge Golf Report: Time for the tournament that’s got it all backwards

Time to get crazy with it. The Bassackwards is back! We’re playing the golf course backwards Friday. You read that correctly.

You tee off from the ninth green and play to the eighth. After that debacle you tee off from the eighth green and play to the seventh. Do that for nine holes and it’s the most diabolical tournament layout you can imagine.

Basically, it’s awesome! Golfers pair in teams of four for this scramble tournament. A team’s combined handicap must be over 60 to be eligible. No stacking teams. This is a super fun night of golf that directly benefits the Birch Ridge Golf Association’s junior golf programs. Support junior golf, hit wildly bizarre golf shots, have a great time. That’s the Bassackwards.

Our only “play your own ball” golf tournament of the season is set for Aug. 29 and 30. Golf professional James Contreras, who works in Fairbanks, is returning to Soldotna to defend his title in the sixth annual Kenai Peninsula Open. Last year’s amateur division winners include Jesse Scott, Shane Sundberg, Rose Pelletier and Denise Cox.

The KPO field is limited to 40 amateurs. Twenty-three golfers have already registered. Don’t wait to play! The Kenai Peninsula Open is a fundraiser in cooperation with the Central Peninsula Health Foundation.

Play two rounds of tournament golf, support the CPHF, eat lots of great food and receive an Under Armour tournament logo hoodie just for playing. It’s a no-brainer!

Old Folks Golf

The old folks did golf Monday, but they forgot to leave any record of their play. That can be expected from time to time considering the demographic.

Tuesday Morning Ladies League

Denise “Dynamite” Cox displayed her golfing prowess again this week in another rendition of lady vs. lady golf action at Birch Ridge. Cox paired with Vicki Hollingsworth and Shirley Johnsrud to win the Bingo-Bango-Bongo competition.

Chiya “Wouldn’t Want to be Ya!” Bazan took home low gross honors with her beautiful play. Louise “Rock the Cradle” Schadle deftly secured the mystery hole. Sonya “Easier than Easy” Rider chipped in at the seventh marking the greatest lady golf shot of the day.

Thursday Night Couples

Madly in love golfers and/or relatives doubled down on their putters Thursday night in a captivating display of couples golf. Vic “Hail Mary” Hussey paired with Margaret “You’ve got Mail” Stanley to post a winning score of 103 net. The friendly duo has been on fire of late with dominating Couples Night performances. Tom “Two Step” Boedeker and his wife, Tanya, finished a respectable second place. The rest of the field participated and had great attitudes.

Joke of the Week

Jim came home from golfing well after dark. His wife, Sally, asked him where he had been for such a long time. He told her that after his 8 a.m. round of golf, he stopped to help a gorgeous blonde with a flat tire. He said that he went back to her place for a cool drink, and ended up spending the entire day with her.

Sally replied, “You liar! You played 36 holes, didn’t you?!”
