This past Saturday and Sunday, the Donnie Morgan Club Championship was held at the Kenai Golf Course. Saturday was a cold, rainy day. Chris Morin’s opening round of 76 was indeed a great score that staked him to a six-stroke lead going into the final round. On Saturday, Closest to the Pin was won by Ken Liedes on hole No. 5 with shot of 7 feet, 6 inches. Hole No. 9 was won by Gary Early with 20 feet, 7 1-4 inches. The Kenai Open will be held this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22 and 23. This tournament is open to anyone with an established USGA handicap. This is the final Atigun Cup event. The format is handicap stroke play. Included in the entry fee of $100 are green fees, lunch for both days, winners prizes and drawings for outstanding gifts. This tournament is sponsored in part by Mike Navarre. Many thanks to Mike for his contributions to several of our tournaments throughout the season. Tee times start at 10 a.m. both days.

Speaking of the Atigun Cup, the Kenai Open is the final event to determine the standings on which the playoffs are based. Current standings are as follows in the Gross Division: Greg Harrington 99 points, Doug Jung 78, Chris Morin 67, Gordon Griffin 46, Ken Liedes 44, Tommy Carver 43, Gilbert Arellano 33, Mark Griffin 25 and Bob Sizemore 9. The top six finishers in this Cup race move on to the playoffs. Standings in the Net Division are: Skip Dove 95 points, Jesse Wade 94, Pat Bowen 75, Michael Houghton 67 and Kirk Hyman 61. The top four in this division will move on to the playoffs.

Congratulations to 13-year-old Lance Kramer on his hole-in-one on No. 5. This is the first time, as far as we know, that a junior golfer has recorded a hole-in-one on the Kenai Golf Course. He and his grandfather Dwight are regulars at KGC. Dwight proudly bought the refreshments!

So far this year, Jesse Wade also scored a hole-in-one on hole No. 9. Doug Jung made a hole-in-one on No. 10. Derek Kaufman scored his hole-in-one on No. 9. When we add in Skip Dove’s hole-in-one on No. 10 that won him a car, we have a grand total of five holes in one on the Kenai Course this season.

Way to go Alice Kerkvliet! Alice broke the 80’s barrier with an outstanding 79 this week. We love to hear about those milestones. We wish you many more great games in the 70’s and know that you have fun no matter what the score.

Men’s Night, August 13

The team of Greg Harrington, Roy Wells and Bill Haese finished first with a score of minus-3, beating out the team of Ken Liedes, Karl Liedes, Kevin Stalker and Max Dye with minus-1. Closest to the Pin on hole No. 10 was won by Roy Wells. Max Dye won Closest to the Pin on hole No. 14. Closest to the Pin on the second shot on hole No. 18 was won by Ken Liedes.

The Kenai Golf Course is in excellent condition. Come out and enjoy some great fall golf. As always, see you on the course!
