Kenai Peninsula Open registration closed yesterday. We’ll have 30 amateurs and nine Alaska Club Professionals participating in this year’s championship. The KPO is the only “play your own ball” golf tournament held at Birch Ridge Golf Course each year. We’re very excited to have Peninsula Radiation Oncology as our title sponsor again in 2015! Tournament tee times will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. We anticipate the golf course opening up for regular afternoon play at 2 p.m. so there’s plenty of golf available for local duffers following the tournament.

The weather has remained fantastic. I can’t believe this summer! It’s Aug. 27 as I write this and I have every window open in the pro-shop in a failed attempt to stay cool. It’s just awesome. The golf course remains in great condition. We’re looking forward to a great September of golf. Something we don’t always get!

We’ll be putting just about all merchandise on sale following the Kenai Peninsula Open. If you’re looking to stock up on golf balls or glove for that winter golf vacation that will be the time to do it!

Old Folks Golf

Mark Hutton posted a net 31 to leave his elderly adversaries trembling in fear. Tom “The Loveable Lefty” Hodel took closest to honors at the sixth and every rejoiced! Steve Tachick placed his ball extraordinarily close to hole at the eighth to claim a similar honor. Tom “Twinkle Toes” Boedeker rolled in the longest putt at the ninth. Senior play will begin at 10 a.m. next Monday! Mark your calendars.

Tuesday Morning Ladies League

In the final “official” rendition of scintillating ladies golf action, Tonya Boedeker paired with Margaret “You’ve Got Mail” Stanley, Shirly Johnsrud and Chiya “Wouldn’t Want to be Ya!” Bazan to place first in the team competition. Denise Cox won the low net award for the 23rd consecutive season. Stanley took the low gross award. Chiya and Cheryl Hammarstrom were labeled the most avid by their fellow competitors.

Thursday Night Couples

Golfers in amicable relationships awkwardly paired for another week of riveting couple on couple golf action. Steve Tachick and Sally Tachick were the greatest golfing couple of the evening to the shock of no one involved. The duo bested Gary Dawkins, Lori Riggs-Bishop and the fightin’ Jelsma’s who both willfully participated.

Joke of the Week

Tiger Woods is good at golf.
