The Kenai Central volleyball cruised to a 2-0 championship match victory over Bethel on Saturday at the North-South tournament in Seward.
After a perfect 6-0 performance against opponents in pool play on Friday, Kenai received a Saturday morning bye, then took care of business in the semifinal round with a 2-0 win over Seward, which set up the title bout against Bethel.
Seward went 2-4 Friday, seeding the Seahawks fifth for Saturday. Seward topped Homer 2-0 before losing to Kenai, and capped its weekend with a 2-0 win over Redington, leaving the Seahawks in a tie for third with Houston.
Homer finished Friday seeded fourth before succumbing to Seward.
Soldotna 3, Grace 0
The Stars improved to 3-0 overall in 2015 with a weekend sweep over Grace Christian and Anchorage Christian Schools, two perennial powerhouses at the 3A level.
Friday, SoHi beat ACS with scores of 25-7, 25-7 and 25-18.
Soldotna continued the momentum Saturday with a sweep of Grace, beating the Grizzlies with scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 25-23.
SoHi coach Sheila Kupferschmid said the weekend provided an ideal opportunity to help the team chemistry.
“These trips always create bonds and community among the team,” Kupferschmid said.
Kupferschmid added that Makenna Rosin and Judah Aley notched solid performances, as Rosin led the Stars in kills and points scored.
The Stars will face a nonconference opponent in Seward on Tuesday before traveling to Palmer for a Northern Lights Conference matchup. SoHi will then host NLC opponent Kodiak on Saturday.
