SoHi, Homer wrestling lead Peninsula teams at Lancer Smith

The Soldotna Stars finished fifth among 43 wrestling teams at the annual Lancer Smith Memorial tournament Friday and Saturday at Colony High School.

South won with 224.5 points, while Colony finished second with 178.5.

SoHi finished with a total of 102.5 points, while the Homer Mariners finished sixth with 86 points. Nikiski finished 26th with 24 points, while Kenai was 37th with five points.

SoHi senior Seth Hutchison recorded the Stars’ lone victory in the 126-pound division, rolling off a 5-0 record including two pins and a major decision. Hutchison claimed the championship with a 6-0 decision over Jack Divelbiss of Dimond.

Freshman brother Gideon Hutchison (106 pounds) and senior Dalton Best (heavyweight) both finished third in their weight classes to pick up SoHi’s next best finishes.

Timmy Woo finished second as the top individual for Homer, recording three major decisions en route to the 152-pound final, where he lost 9-6 to North Pole’s Ethan Schumaker.

Luciano Fasulo (120 pounds) and Jared Brant (132) both finished fourth in their weight classes for Homer.

Nathan Carstens was the only Nikiski wrestler to advance to the knockout rounds, picking up a sixth-place finish in the 170-pound division by advancing to the semifinal round. Carstens notched three straight pins before losing to Jordan Nero of Colony.

Keyshawn McEnerny picked up Kenai’s only points with a pair of wins in the 152-pound division.
