Soldotna native Cory Davis and teammate Ryan Simons of Camrose, Alberta, scratched Tuesday from the Iron Dog snowmachine race. According to a Facebook post on Davis’ athlete site, the team suffered mechanical issues and could not continue.

According to race GPS tracking, the pair checked into Galena, which lies 546 miles into the 2,031-mile race, at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, and began their way out soon after, before turning around shortly in the early morning hours.

Kasilof racer Dusty VanMeter and Ski-Doo teammate Chad Gueco of Wasilla arrived at the halfway point in Nome Tuesday evening at 7:26 p.m., nearly four hours after race leaders Tyler Aklestad of Palmer and Tyson Johnson of Eagle River checked in. VanMeter and Gueco have averaged 44 mph along the way thus far.

The top 11 teams have pulled into Nome as of Tuesday night and have covered a distance of 1,108 miles. The teams will then leave Nome for the stretch run to Fairbanks.
