Soldotna’s Allie Ostrander was named the West Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year on Friday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The award is for the 2016 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field season.

The 2015 Kenai Central graduate ran in just three indoor meets, but turned heads in all three.

At the UW Invitational, the Boise State freshman ran the 5,000-meter run in 15 minutes, 21.85 seconds, breaking school and Mountain West records. It was the third-fastest oversized indoor track time in collegiate history.

Ostrander also ran the 3,000 meters at the Husky Invitational in 8:54.27, again breaking school and Mountain West records. That time also was third-fastest in collegiate history on the oversized track.

In her third appearance at indoor track, Ostrander helped the Broncos win the women’s distance medley at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Ostrander is schedule to compete in the 3,000 and 5,000 at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, from March 11 to 12. She has the top 3,000 time in the field, and the second-best 5,000 time.
