Area skiers compete at Junior Nationals

Peninsula skiers Sadie Fox and Hannah Pothast of Soldotna and Travis Cooper of Kenai Central competed in the 2014 USSA Cross Country Junior Championships this week in Stowe, Vt.

The action started Monday with the individual start classic.

Cooper posted the best finish for the Peninsula, taking 19th in the 16-17 10-kilometer. He finished in 30 minutes, 11 seconds, while winner Peter Holmes of Far West finished at 28:37.

Fox finished 40th in the 16-17 girls race with a time of 17:58. New England’s Katharine Ogden won at 15:49. Pothast was 59th in that race with a time of 18:37.

Wednesday, competitors did a classic sprint.

Cooper made it to the quarterfinals before getting eliminated in the under-18 races, while Fox and Pothast just missed qualifying for the sprint quarterfinals.

Friday saw the competitors do a mass start freestyle.

Cooper finished 27th in the Under-18 10-kilometer race with a time of 27:19. Gavin McEwen of New England took the top spot at 25:43.

In the 16-17 10-kilometer, Fox took 44th in 32:47, while winner Ogden won at 29:28. Pothast was 61st in that race in 34:10.

Saturday, the event ended with freestyle relay races. In the 16-17 3-by-3-kilometer event, Fox helped Team Alaska to sixth place with a time of 21:51. New England won at 21:05. Fox teamed with Emma Tarbath and Sarrissa Lammers.

Pothast also was in that race, teaming with Jane Hoefler and Mariana Jager to finish 18th in 23:20.

Cooper competed in the 16-17 3-by-3 event, teaming with William Mans and Conner Truskowski to take 13th in 19:37. The Alaska team of John Farr, Joe Bue and Thomas O’Harra won at 18:32.
