It has been decided, due to the wonderful weekend weather forecast, that I would do the column. If it looks like rain, we will have Zac Cowan write them.
We continue have green grass coming in super fast. We have planted most areas and now turn to the task of mowing the long grass to short grass. I want to recognize our hard-working staff members. Mike Rose, Tom Maloney, Jake Eubank and Max Conradi got us started strong. Now that school is out we welcome back Danica Schmidt and Brock Kant. We also add C.J. Henley to the staff soon.
If you like the look of the course this year these are the people to thank. And I know how much effort these guys and gals do for the golf course. I would also like to thank the honoree groundskeepers Rita Geller and Mark Baker. They have bailed me out many times.
Fertilizer is on the way for fairways and tee boxes — hopefully matching the colors of the putting greens.
Those golfers who come out early may see the twin baby moose that are gracing our links this year. The eagle’s nest has a bit of activity so far. A lone caribou was spotted last week.
Junior golf sign-up continues as we anticipate a large turnout for the week of June 13 to 17.
This is the perfect time of the year in Alaska, to dust off the clubs and get a few rounds of golf in before the salmon start filling the rivers and freezers. Our three teaching professionals have some room in their schedules to fix your slice or help you stop three-putting with your friends.
Seniors
Seventeen players braved the sunny, warm day this week. Upcoming Mondays will start at 10 a.m. This upcoming seniors day, because of the holiday, will be Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Steve Hammarstrom, Kurt Nelson and Mike Hollingsworth tied for first with a low net 31. Closest to the pin was taken on Nos. 6 and 8 by Steve Hammerstrom and the longest putt on the ninth hole went to Mike Hollingstoworth.
Ladies
Nine ladies came out for the first event of the season Tuesday, providing wonderful weather and great company. Ladies continue to check in at 9:30 a.m. for their 10 a.m. Tuesday starts.
Low gross belonged to Tanya Boedeker. Low net went home to Cheryl Hammarstrom. Trena Richardson had the hot putter today with the fewest putts and Susan Jelsma was the par-3 goddess, winning the closest to the pin on No. 8.

Men’s
A total of nine players came out Wednesday. Tom Hodel low gross with 39, while Darrell Jelsma was second at 41. Earl Mathis had low net at 31, while Kevin Downs was next at 36.
