The American Legion Twins opened up their season in Anchorage on Wednesday with a 19-4 victory against West in a game that was stopped after six innings due to the mercy rule.

The Twins, the runner-up at state last year, banged out 20 hits against the Eagles.

“It’s a good conference win,” Twins coach Robb Quelland said. “We didn’t have to use a lot of pitching, so they puts us in order for the rest of the week.”

Mathew Daugherty pitched five innings, giving up four unearned runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four.

Klayton Justice finished up with a scoreless inning of relief.

At the plate, Josh Darrow was 2 for 5 with three runs, Paul Steffensen was 1 for 2 with three runs and two RBIs, Kenny Griffin was 4 for 4 with three runs and six RBIs, Joey Becher was 2 for 4, Calvin Hills was 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs, Tyler Covey was 2 for 3 with three runs, Mason Prior was 2 for 4 with three runs, and Cody Quelland was 3 for 5 with four RBIs.

The Twins stay on the road for a doubleheader at Palmer today, then have a doubleheader at Chugiak on Saturday and a single game at East on Sunday.
