The bats were singing Thursday evening at Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak as the Peninsula Oilers picked up a 14-7 victory over the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks.

Peninsula improved to 4-2 in the Alaska Baseball League with the win and 5-3 overall.

The two teams combined for 21 runs and 29 hits. The Oilers entered the day averaging 4.7 hits per game, but racked up 16 against the Chinooks.

Alex Seifert led the onslaught by hitting 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Shih-Tsung Wang batted in two runs on 2-for-5 hitting including a triple.

The two teams combined for eight runs in the fourth inning alone, starting with three by the Oilers at the top of the frame and five by the Chinooks at the bottom.

Chapuran and Piscotty were both hit by pitches to reach bases in the frame, setting up Alex Seifert to bring them home with a go-ahead double. Brian Ruhm followed that up with a single to plate Seifert, pushing the Oilers lead to 5-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chugiak’s Mason Mallard hit into fielder’s choice with the bases loaded, which ultimately scored two runs on an Oilers error. Isaac Alvarez managed to score on a balk by Huang, Ethan Wiskur hit a two-RBI single, and the sequence resulted in the Chinooks taking a 7-5 lead.

However, it did not last long. The Oilers answered with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Seth DeWitt got on base on an error, then scored on a single from Jonathan Washam. The tying run came home on an RBI single by Jeff Chapuran, plating Wang and knotting it up at seven runs apiece.

Washam and Chapuran both scored on a go-ahead RBI double by Austin Piscotty to give the Oilers a 9-7 lead. Piscotty scored from second on an RBI single from Seifert.

Wang banged out a triple in the top of the sixth, then scored on a single by Washam for an 11-7 lead.

Daniel Szpik opened the top of the eighth with a leadoff triple, then scored on a single by DeWitt, who then scored on a double by Cameron Miller to make it 13-7.

The Chinooks’ efforts to rally back were finally doused with a double play to end the game. Ethan Wiskur hit the ball to third baseman Piscotty, who whipped it to Seifert and on to DeWitt for the double play and the win.

Billy Oxford started and pitched 3 2-3 innings, giving up seven runs (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out two. Yi-Hsin Huang ultimately earned the win by tossing 2 1-3 innings of scoreless relief with just two hits, and Zack Hamilton finished the final three frames scoreless with three hits.

The Oilers hit around Chinooks starter Nick Campe, who pitched 4 1-3 innings, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits.

The Oilers will face the Anchorage Glacier Pilots tonight at 7 p.m. at Mulcahy Field. The Oilers went 1-2 against the Pilots in a home series last weekend.
