What a great weekend we had for both weather and golf! The sixth Kenai Peninsula Open is done, with James Contreras emerging the winner! It was a battle though, with high scores due to fast and firm greens conditions. Huge thanks to Bill Engberg and his staff for making it all possible.
Club Results
Monday Morning Seniors
Low net went to Tim Bowser, playing much better than his handicap, scoring a 30. In doing so, he also made the longest putt on No. 9. He couldn’t win them all though, with Dave Mathison winning closest to on No. 6, and No. 8 went to Dave Johnsrud.
Tuesday Morning Ladies
This was the last Tuesday of the month, so the ladies played their scramble event, and have their end-of-season party after the golf was all done. The winning team was Georgia Bentley, Leona Jackson and Sally Tachick. Thanks, ladies, for a great season and happy Tuesday mornings.
Tuesday Night Couples
Four couples came out and there was a big of confusion on the format, so the payouts are going to be carried over to next week. There was one notable moment though, with Myrna Cowan (grandma) getting closest to at the eighth, hitting it to within 20 inches! NICE!
HUGE Wednesday
A small group of 14 came out to play for the Pure Birdie carryover, which ended up being $277! It’s only fitting that the man responsible for the best greens in Alaska wins it all! Congratulations, Bill Engberg, on making two pure birdies, and helping his team to 5-under for the win, along with Trevor Baldwin and Steve Fickes. Bill also won closest to at the sixth, and Earl Matthis won another closest to at the eighth. George Stein won the long drive this week as well.
Upcoming events
Sept. 8 will be the Wino Classic, hosted by the golf course and led by Gene Diamond, this wine-tasting experience is not only educational, it is also a lot of fun. Following the tasting, Bill Engberg and I will lead you in a golf clinic to perfect your game. Call the pro shop to sign up. We need 20 people to be signed up by Monday to make this event happen. Please do not wait to sign up.
The Birch and Bird Tournament will be Sept. 11. This is a fun rivalry between Birch Ridge and Bird Homestead golf courses, where the first nine holes is played at Bird, followed by nine more at Birch. Call for more details.
Sept. 24 is the Cold Weather Classic, which serves as a symbol as the end of the season. This is a couples tournament with an alternate shot format, coupled with cool weather and beautiful fall colors. Call the shop for more details on this great and classic event.
