Nikiski volleyball battles with Grace Christian

The Nikiski volleyball squad split its Southcentral Conference weekend road trip with a win over Houston and a riveting loss to Grace Christian.

Friday at Grace Christian, Nikiski lost 3-2, with scores of 22-25, 29-27, 25-18, 22-25 and 13-15.

The eye-popping stats of the night went to Melanie Sexton and Kelsey Clark, who combined for a tight defensive effort. Sexton finished with 68 digs and Kelsey Clark had 59.

Sexton also had six kills, while Jamie Yerkes added 11 kills and Ayla Pitt had nine kills and six blocks. Kaitlyn Johnson provided four aces and 10 assists.

Saturday in Houston, the Bulldogs won 3-1 with scores of 24-26, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-19.

Once again, Sexton and Clark were on point. Sexton racked up 54 digs and Clark followed with 41. Johnson added five aces and 12 assists and Pitt notched five kills and four blocks.

Meanwhile, the Seward Seahawks claimed a three-set sweep over Anchorage Christian Schools Saturday in Anchorage, winning with scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 28-26.

Up in Kotzebue, the Homer Mariners lost a 3-2 match Saturday to host team Kotzebue, one day after losing in a Friday three-set sweep.
