The Kenai Central girls and Ninilchik boys came up empty again on Wednesday, the second day of the 50th annual Joe Floyd/Ravn Alaska Winter Classic tournament in Kodiak.

The Kenai girls lost to West Valley 39-31, while the Ninilchik boys lost 66-53 to the Kodiak boys, leaving both teams with 0-2 records this week.

For the Wolverines, a Class 1A school, the loss marked the third straight against bigger competition. Ninilchik has lost to Dimond, West Valley and now Kodiak, all 4A teams, but has kept it close in two of those games. Ninilchik does have a win over Soldotna this year, a 39-37 contest at the Al Howard/Powerade Tipoff tournament two weeks ago, and led for much of the way in a 63-53 loss to West Valley on Tuesday.

Ninilchik senior Austin White improved on his three-point performance against West Valley to score 25 points against Kodiak on Wednesday, while teammate Tyler Presley chipped in 18 points.

The Bears started fast and put Ninilchik in a 25-12 hole after the first quarter, a deficit the Wolverines could not make up the rest of the way. Kodiak led 52-38 after the third quarter.

In the girls game, Brooke Satathite led Kenai with 13 points, while Bethany Coghill sunk three buckets in the third quarter to finish with nine points.

West Valley led 24-15 at halftime, but Kenai’s defense held the Wolfpack to just three points in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 27-24 entering the fourth.

However, in the final eight minutes, West Valley finished the job by outscoring Kenai 12-7.

In other games, Fort Pierce Central High (Florida) defeated the Kodiak girls 43-15, and the “older” generation of Kodiak basketball alumni beat the “younger” generation of alumni 66-43.

Ninilchik will face the Kodiak alumni team today at 3 p.m., while Kenai Central will play the Fort Pierce girls at 1:30 p.m.
