Saturday hoops roundup: Palmer sweeps Kenai Central

The visiting Palmer girls used a big third quarter to capture a 45-37 victory over Kenai on Saturday in Northern Lights Conference play.

Palmer led 25-24 at halftime, but stretched the lead to 40-31 after three quarters.

Lorna Suaaia had 11 points to pace the Moose, while Kassidy Bowman pitched in 10. For Kenai, Brooke Satathite dumped in 13 points.

Palmer boys 50, Kenai 38

The visiting Moose used a dominant third quarter to notch a Northern Lights Conference victory over the Kardinals on Saturday.

Palmer stretched an 18-15 lead at halftime to 39-24 after three quarters.

Dae Oslensky hit six 3-pointers to lead Palmer with 20 points. Oslensky also had 14 points during the crucial third period. Clayton Southwick added 12 points for the Moose.

For Kenai, Josh Jackman pumped in 18 points.

Seward girls 36, Homer 27

The visiting Seahawks jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter en route to a Southcentral Conference victory Saturday.

Coral Petrosius led the way for Seward with 17 points. Rylyn Todd put up eight points for Homer.

Homer boys 53, Seward 38

The host Mariners picked up 23 points from Koby Etzwiler in claiming a Southcentral Conference victory Saturday.

Charles Rohr added 14 for Homer, which led 14-5 after one quarter and 38-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

Sully Hauze came through with 10 points for Seward.

Ninilchik boys 70, CIA 13

The Wolverines blasted the Eagles in a Peninsula Conference matchup Saturday at CIA.

Ninilchik held CIA scoreless in the first quarter en route to a monstrous 46-2 lead at halftime.

Three Ninilchik players scored more points individually than CIA had together, led by Garrett Koch with 19 points. Dalton Geppert added 16 points and Tyler Presley had 15.

ConocoPhillips Warrior Rumble

The Klawock girls and boys basketball teams won the round-robin ConocoPhillips Warrior Rumble on Saturday in Nikolaevsk.

The Klawock, Nikolaevsk and Ninilchik girls all finished 1-1. The tiebreaker for the top spot was points allowed in the tournament. Ninilchik allowed 64, while Nikolaevsk allowed 52 and Klawock allowed 48.

The tiebreaker for second place was head-to-head competition, so Nikolaevsk took second by virtue of its Thursday victory over Ninilchik.

The Ninilchik girls set up the tiebreaker by topping Klawock 30-20. The Wolverines took a 13-4 lead after the first quarter and were able to make it stand up.

Olivia Delgado had 12 points to lead Ninilchik, while DeeAnn White added 11 points. Lillian Borromeo had nine for the Chieftains.

The Klawock boys clinched the title by defeating the Homer junior varsity 49-31 for a 3-0 run through the tournament. Nate Yockey had 18 points for the Chieftains, while Trae Marvin added 12. Henry Russell had nine for the Mariners.

The Nikolaevsk girls scored a 40-12 victory over Birchwood Christian on Saturday. Nikolaevsk led 10-1 after one quarter and 20-3 at halftime.

Elizabeth Fefelov had 13 points to pace Nikolaevsk, while Maddy Carey had seven points for Birchwood Christian.

Birchwood Christian overcame a 15-6 deficit after the first quarter for a 53-51 victory over Nikolaevsk. The victory gave Birchwood Christian second in the tournament with a 2-1 record.

Landen Wohrle and Logen Wohrle each had 16 points for Birchwood Christian, while Kalenik Molodih had 18 and Nikit Fefelov added 17 for Nikolaevsk.

The MVPs of the tournament were Nate Yockey of Klawock for the boys and DeeAnn White of Ninilchik for the girls.

The boys all-tournament team is Seth Adkins of Homer, Michael Balos of Birchwood, Collin Becker of Birchwood, Japheth McGhee of Homer, Mason Hoppe of Klawock, Kalenik Molodih of Nikolaevsk, Nikit Fefelov of Nikolaevsk, Anfim Kalugin of Nikolaevsk and Trae Marvin of Klawock.

The girls all-tournament team is Lillian Borromeo of Klawock, Elizabeth Fefelov of Nikolaevsk, Mikayla Clark of Ninilchik, Kristin Klaich of Nikolaevsk, Kiara Sullivan of Birchwood, Vanessa Edenshaw of Klawock, Vera Fefelov of Nikolaevsk, Olivia Delgado of Ninilchik and Taya Marvin of Klawock.

The sportsmanship awards went to the Nikolaevsk boys and Birchwood Christian girls. The free-throw champs were Yockey of Klawock and Delgado of Ninilchik, while Kosta Nikitenko of Nikolaevsk and White of Ninilchik were the top 3-point shooters.
