The first part of this report is for NON GOLFERS: Those of you who don’t play golf and have never seen the beautiful views your local golf courses provide to your community. You owe it to yourself to come out to Birch Ridge Golf Course, the Bird Homestead Golf Course in Funny River or the Kenai Golf Course and see what beautiful tourist attractions we offer these communities.

This year, the rain has helped make these golf courses absolutely beautiful, even though it makes the turf crews work a lot harder to keep the grass mowed. All of the courses have beautiful views to offer, volcanoes, mountains, river valleys, and all have considerable wildlife that inhabit our turf — moose, caribou, eagles and an occasional bear, plus many small game animals and various birds. If you have guests visiting, these golf courses are definitely worth a sightseeing trip.

Senior Men on Monday: Vic Hussey just missed a clean sweep. He was low net, and closest to the pin on Nos. 6 and 8. Dave Mathison had the long putt.

Ladies on Tuesday: The format was a scramble and it was won by Beth Roseberry, Chiya Bazan, Sally Hoagland and second-chance Frieda. Second place went to Mary McKenzie, Cheryl Hammarstrom, Louise Schadle and Denise Cox. After play, the ladies enjoyed their end-of-the-month potluck lunch.

Men’s Night on Wednesday: Six men braved the rainy conditions and the winners of the scramble were Steve Tachick, Kevin Downs and Robert Stiver. Long drive at the third was Robert Stiver. Closest to the pin on at the sixth went to Jake Eveland and No. 8 went to “carry-over.” In other words, no one hit the green. There also was no pure birdie, so that is also a carry-over. Big money is in play next week.

Saturday, the Seward Seahawks Booster Club tournament tees off at 8 a.m. The tournament is a four-person scramble with many contests, long drive, closest to the pin on both par 3s, prizes, a barbeque and much more. The proceeds go to provide travel and uniforms for the Seward High School athletes.

If you do business in Seward, are formally from Seward, of have friends or relatives in Seward, you should come out and support and play in this tournament. For more information, call Kim Reirerson at 907-362-1888 or home at 907-224-3228.

The Soldotna Elks Club Charity Tournament “Phil Turkington Classic” will tee off at 9 a.m. on Aug. 12. Format is an 18-hole scramble with four players on each team. This is one of the most fun tournaments of the year and includes a steak dinner served at the Elks Club after the tournament is over. Many prizes are awarded and they have a Calcutta the night before at the Elks Club.

You do not have to be an Elk to play and they encourage both men and women to play. For more information and applications, call the Elks Club at 907-262-2706, or Kevin O’Fallon 398-6923, or the Birch Ridge pro shop at 262-5270.
