August was a month of rain, some sun, backward golf and two-day championships.

We hosted the Bassackwards Golf Tournament on Aug. 17. It is a crazy and fun event where we play the golf course backward, teeing off from near No. 9 green and playing to No. 8 green and so on.

It was a fun event that came down to three teams shooting tying 32s. After it was all over, the team of Zac Cowan, Gary Dawkins, Lori Riggs-Bishop and Trevor Baldwin came out on top. Overall, this was a fundraiser for our Birch Ridge Golf Association Junior Golf program and raised over $2,000! Thank you to all who participated.

This month also hosted the Kenai Peninsula Open, a two-day stroke play event that pitted the pros against each other as well as many amateur golfers from the area. There was already extensive article written about the tournament but to sum up, Rob Nelson won the Open division after a two-hole playoff with Beau Forrest. Marcus Dolejsi edged out the Amateurs for low gross and our own junior sensation, Shane Sundberg won low net. This tournament couldn’t happen without our sponsor, the Central Peninsula Health Foundation. Thank you to Kathy Gensel and her team for her support.

Upcoming events

Sept. 16 will be our nine-hole, par-3 scramble. This is going to be a three-person team event for both gross and net, with three closest to the pin competitions. Notice a trend? Call the pro shop for more details.

The Cold Weather Classic is Sept. 23. This is a great event for couples. Format is Scotch doubles, where you each drive and then alternate from there. Call the pro shop to sign up.

I have been lacking a bit on the column so here is a quick snapshot of the club results for August:

Aug. 23 Men’s Night — The event had 10 players, with Mark Baker, Jakob Brown and Darell Jelsma taking first place. Closest to the pins went to Bill Haese on No. 6 at 22 feet, 10 inches, and Dave Brown on No. 8 at 54 feet, 6 inches. Baker took the long drive at the second, while Trevor Baldwin had a pure birdie on No. 2

Wednesday Men’s Night — This Big Wednesday drew 16 players. Kevin Downs had closest to the pin on No. 6 at 8 feet, 5 inches, while No. 8 was a carryover. Nick Karnos smashed the long drive at the second.

Aug. 14 Seniors — The low net went to Steve Hammarstrom at 31. Sid Cox cleaned up with closest to the pin on Nos. 6 and 8, while the longest putt at the ninth went to Kevin O’Fallon.

Aug. 24 Seniors — Kevin O’Fallon took the low net with a score of 32, while Sid Cox was closest to the pin at No. 6. The longest putt belonged to Kevin O’Fallon.

Aug. 28 Seniors — Sid Cox took home low net at 33 and also nestled his ball closest to the pin at the sixth. For the fifth time in a row, the longest putt went to Kevin O’Fallon.

Aug. 22 Ladies — Ten ladies showed up and missed the rain, but that doesn’t mean the course wasn’t wet. Low gross went to Irma Peterson, while low net went to Trena Richardson. Tanya Boedeker won the Poker Hand Mystery Hole. Irma Peterson was closest to the pin at No. 8, while Denise Cox and Cheryl Hammarstrom took average score.

Aug. 15 Ladies — Ten ladies again played, with Leona Jackson, Dee Richards, Cheryl Hammarstrom and Rita Geller teaming for victory. Sally Hoagland got closest to the pin at No. 8. Rita Geller took the fewest putts, and also had a nice birdie on No. 9.
