Kenai girls, SoHi boys win borough cross-country titles

The Kenai Central girls and boys took three of the four championships Tuesday at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Cross-Country Running Championships at Lookout Mountain in Homer.

Senior Addison Gibson won her first individual borough crown to lead the Kardinals to a second straight title. Kards freshman Maison Dunham won the boys race, while the Soldotna boys edged Homer for the boys team title.

Gibson ran 10 minutes, 48 seconds, on the hilly, three-kilometer course to take the title on a cold, rainy day.

“She has just had a stellar year,” Kenai coach Maria Calvert said. “It all goes back to the work she put in this summer. She was our No. 5 girl last year and this year she has been our No. 1 girl at every single meet.”

Homer’s Autumn Daigle led the race for a while, but Gibson caught Daigle and beat her by three seconds. Kenai’s Jaycie Calvert, Riana Boonstra and Brooke Satathite were third, fourth and fifth respectively to set up the team title. Sarah Drury, at 13th, was the final scoring runner for the Kards.

“If we have someone struggle in a race, someone else has to step up for the team,” Calvert said. “Sarah stepped up for her team.”

Kenai won with 26 points, while Homer had 33 and Soldotna had 67.

The Mariners also put Alex Moseley (sixth), Brooke Miller (seventh), Shine Carey (eighth) and Sienna Carey (10th) in the top 10. Erika Arthur led the Stars by finishing ninth.

Dunham got out to a lead and was able to hold Homer’s Jacob Davis off in a sprint finish. Dunham finished at 9:17, while Davis was just a second behind.

“I do not even think about him as a freshman,” Calvert said of Dunham. “I just know he’s a real competitor and he’s had such a good season so far.

“When Jacob came up, Maison found something extra to hold him off.”

The Stars scored 39 points to win, while Homer had 45.

Soldotna was led by Josh Shuler in third, then Lance Chilton (sixth), Koby Vinson (ninth), Bradley Walters (10th) and Mekbeb Denbrock (11th) came in quick succession.

For Homer, Luciano Fasulo (fifth) and Jordan Beachy (seventh) also were in the top 10. Seward freshman Neil Lindquist finished fourth, while Kenai’s Karl Danielson was eighth.
