The Kenai Central hockey team defeated Glennallen-Kenny Lake 7-6 on Friday in nonconference action at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility, getting hat tricks from Levi Mese and Jakeb O’Brien.

The Kardinals started fast, leading 3-0 after the first period on a goal from Mese and two goals from O’Brien. In the second period, Mese scored twice, O’Brien scored once and Brenna Eubank added a tally for a 7-0 lead. Before the end of the second, Gabe Doty made it 7-1.

Then in the final period, Glennallen-Kenny Lake closed the gap with two goals by Jesse Biddle, two goals by Miguel Saavedra and another goal by Doty.

The Homer Mariners capped their weekend with a shutout victory over a defending state champion.

Homer blanked Monroe Catholic 2-0 Saturday morning, during the final day of the Palmer Hockey Showdown at the MTA Events Center in Palmer.

Homer goalie Hunter Warren stopped all 20 shots he faced to help the Mariners top the Rams, who skated to a 3A state title last season. Charlie Menke and Dimitry Kuzman scored goals for the Mariners.

Colony earned the tournament title with its 5-3 win over Dimond Saturday afternoon. Both Colony and Homer finished 3-0 at the tourney, but the Knights claimed the title on goal differential. Menke represented Homer on the all-tournament team.
