Prep hoops roundup: Nikiski girls, SoHi boys collect wins

The Nikiski girls basketball team improved to 2-0 at the 51st annual Joe Floyd tournament in Kodiak with a 70-37 victory over Eagle River.

 

The Bulldogs were again dominant early, leading 23-4 after the first quarter and 44-20 at halftime.

Nikiski got points from eight different scorers, with Bethany Carstens leading the way with 33 points. Carstens was dominant from all over the floor, hitting five of Nikiski’s eight 3-pointers. Emma Wik pitched in 10 points for the Bulldogs.

For Eagle River, Chyna Finley had 15 points and Kamryn Perry pitched in 13. Today, the Nikiski girls conclude the tourney by facing Lathrop at 1:30 p.m.

Cottage Grove boys 63, Nikiski 42

The Bulldogs lost to a familiar face at the Joe Floyd tournament Thursday.

Nick Finley, who coached the Ninilchik boys to a pair of Class 1A titles before departing after last season, led the Lions past the Bulldogs.

Cottage Grove led 13-8 after a quarter and 36-21 at halftime.

Jesse Ellingworth led the Lions and all scorers with 25 points, while Eride Vallejo-Griffen pitched in with 16.

For the Bulldogs, Jace Kornstad pumped in 17 points, while Ian Johnson added 11.

Today, the Bulldogs conclude the tournament by facing Kodiak at 7 p.m.

Soldotna boys 54, Friends Academy 47

Playing in the fourth-place bracket in the Slam Division at the San Diego Surf ‘N’ Slam Tournament, the Stars notched the victory over the squad from New York City.

Sam McElroy led the way for the Stars with 25 points.

Soldotna faces Lake Stevens of Washington for fourth place Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Alaska time.

Ketchikan girls 55, Kenai 36

The Kardinals dropped their opening game in the Clark Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan to the Kings.

The Kardinals continue play in the tournament today at 12:30 p.m. against Navajo Prep of Farmington, New Mexico.

Kenai trailed 16-11 after the first quarter, then lost Brooke Satathite to an ankle injury in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing 33-20.

Jaycie Calvert paced the Kardinals with eight points.

For Ketchikan, Brittany Slick notched 20 points, while Payton Simmons added 12.
