Friday hoops roundup: Kenai, SoHi find trouble in Valley

PALMER — It took some time, but the Colony girls basketball team was able to shake the Kenai Kardinals.

 

Colony used a 16-4 second-quarter run and 19 fourth-quarter points to earn a 51-27 Northern Lights Conference win over the Kardinals on Friday night at Colony High School.

Colony led just 7-6 after the first quarter, but the Knights began to separate themselves in the second. The Knights scored nearly half of their points in the fourth en route to improving to 3-0 in NLC play. Junior Kali Bull hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored seven of her nine points during the final frame. Amanda Smith also hit one of her trio of 3s in the fourth. Smith scored a game-high 13 points. Alex Carlton also scored nine.

Liz Hanson scored a team-high nine for Kenai. The Kards were held to only 10 first-half points in the loss, and single digits in scoring during each of the first three quarters.

Colony finished with seven 3-pointers in the victory.

Colony boys 74, Kenai 46

The Knights ran past the Kardinals later that Friday evening. Colony hit five 3s and scored 24 points during the opening quarter. Sullivan Menard and Colton Spencer hit two each. Will Freeman added another from beyond the arc.

The Knights also enjoyed a huge third quarter. Menard hit three of his game-high five 3s in the third, and 11 of his game-best 18 in the period. Patrick McMahon scored six of his 10 points during the third. Spencer added 14 in the win for the Knights, now 3-0 in NLC play.

Luke Beiser led Kenai with 13. Zack Tuttle hit a pair of 3s and added 11.

Wasilla girls 60, Soldotna 41

Olivia Davies hit all three Wasilla 3-pointers and led the Wasilla girls to a 60-41 NLC win over Soldotna on Friday night at Wasilla High.

Davies, a first-team all-state selection last year, netted a game-high 15 points in a win that lifted Wasilla to 4-0 in NLC play. Davies also finished with nine assists and seven rebounds. Diondra Lawhead added a dozen points and a half-dozen rebounds. Maclaren Obremski added 10 points.

Danica Schmidt shot 4 of 8 from the floor in the loss, 3 of 5 from three-point range, and led SoHi with 11 points in the loss. Aliann Schmidt pulled down a game-best 13 rebounds. Soldotna outrebounded Wasilla 39-27 in the loss.

Wasilla boys 61, Soldotna 39

Wasilla improved to 4-0 in the NLC with a victory over Soldotna.

Reilly Devine led the Warriors with 18 points and eight rebounds. Aeron Milliron also scored 18. Jordan Knight added 11.

Jersey Truesdell led SoHi with eight.

Nikiski girls 64, Seward 29

The visiting Bulldogs made quick work of the Seahawks, bolting to a 21-4 lead after one quarter to collect a Southcentral Conference triumph Friday.

Bethany Carstens had 17 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Emma Wik had 12 and Lillian Carstens had 10. For Seward, Ashley Jackson hit three 3-pointers and scored 15.

Nikiski boys 48, Seward 41

The visiting Bulldogs jumped out to a lead and held on for a Southcentral Conference victory over the Seahawks on Friday.

Nikiski led 16-9 after the first quarter and 26-18 at halftime. By the start of the fourth, the gap was 38-22.

Jace Kornstad pumped in 25 points to lead the Bulldogs, including four 3-pointers. Noah Litke added 11. For Seward, Connor Spanos had 22 points, while Zen Petrosius had 14.

Grace Christian girls 37, Homer 30

The host Grizzlies notched a Southcentral Conference victory over the Mariners on Friday.

Grace Christian boys 61, Homer 35

The host Grizzlies took down the Mariners for a Southcentral Conference victory Friday.

Ninilchik boys 71, Kodiak ESS 41

The host Wolverines rolled to a Peninsula Conference victory Friday.

Ninilchik received a game-high 25 points from Garrett Koch, 13 from George Nelson and 12 from Jake Clark. Mason Mullan had 22 points to lead Kodiak ESS.

Nikolaevsk Warrior Rumble

Friday, the Lumen Christi girls edged Nikolaevsk 37-34. Lumen Christi led 22-17 at halftime and then 33-19 after three quarters. The Warriors then pulled out a 15-4 fourth quarter, but it was not enough.

Wyadeng Puoy poured in 18 points to lead the Archangels. For Nikolaevsk, Justina Fefelov and Elizabeth Fefelov each had 11 points.

The Lumen Christi boys notched a 50-39 victory over Nikolaevsk on Friday. Nikolaevsk led 21-18 at halftime and trailed 28-27 after three quarters, but the Archangels owned the fourth quarter.

For Lumen Christi, Andrew Bennett had 22 points, while Lam Pouy added 16. Kalenik Molodih had 19 points for the Warriors, while Zachary Trail added 10.

Also Friday, the Nenana girls defeated Nunamiut School at Anaktuvak Pass 51-35. Melissa Nickoli had 19 points for Nenana, while Abi Fry and Caitlin Gallager had 11 points apiece for Nunamiut.

In the boys game, Nunamiut came back with a 61-46 victory. Dyrell Lincoln had 22 points for Nunamiut, while Jacob Ahgook had 21 and Chase Nay added 11. For Nenana, Tony Oktollik had 14 and Al Lane added 12.
