Kenai girls, Kodiak boys get weekend sweep

The Kenai Central girls basketball team outscored Kodiak 15-2 over the last five minutes of the game for a 46-27 Northern Lights Conference victory at Cliff Massie Court in Kenai.

After also defeating Kodiak 49-18 on Saturday, the Kardinals move to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the league, while Kodiak falls to 0-8 in the league and has one win on the season.

“It’s really big, especially with regions coming up,” said Brooke Satathite, who led all scorers Friday with 17 points.

The Kardinals started out slow on offense, trailing 8-7 after the first quarter.

Jaycie Calvert, who added 11 points, gave credit to the Bears.

“Kodiak is always a really good team,” she said. ” They always come out and play with intensity and we had to stay poised under pressure.”

So Kodiak’s defense may have rattled Kenai a bit.

“Our shots just weren’t going in,” said Kenai defensive stopper Hayley Maw. “We got a little more anxious on offense. We were passing too fast and they were getting steals.”

Maw said that just made her want to play defense harder, and for that Satathite is thankful. She credited Maw, Lexy Carrasco, Kasey Paxton and Jaycie Calvert for the on-ball pressure that kept the Bears within reach.

“Their pressure on the ball got us ready to play defense,” Satathite said. “The defense is what saved us.”

The Kardinals gathered some steam on offense, leading 20-13 at the half and 31-21 after three quarters. Kodiak cut the gap to 31-25 in the fourth, but Kenai took over from there.

Kodiak coach Sandra Gregory said she has a young team with just one senior. The group was right with the Kardinals until forgetting a fundamental.

“Before that point we were actually boxing out and getting rebounds,” Gregory said. “Kenai started getting second and third chances and that allowed them to pull away.”

Satathite said Carrasco’s pressure helped during the run, while Calvert added the team ran their offense well.

“It was an all-around team win,” Calvert said. “Everybody played a part.”
