Boonstra, Danielson win borough titles

Kenai Central’s Riana Boonstra and Karl Danielson, and the Homer girls and Soldotna boys won titles Saturday at the Kenai Peninsula Borough meet at Trail River Campground.

Both the girls and boys did a nine-kilometer skiathlon, with 4.8 kilometers of classic and 4.2 kilometers of skate. Trail River is relatively flat, so some skiers chose to double pole the entire course.

In the girls race, Homer’s Katia Holmes and Autumn Daigle battled it out in the classic portion, then Holmes and Boonstra dueled once the technique switched to freestyle. Boonstra won at 29 minutes, 24 seconds, with Holmes just one second back. Seward’s Ruby Lindquist battled back in the skate portion to finish third in 29:58, while Daigle finished fourth at 30:13.

The Homer girls edged Kenai for the title, 2:06:02 to 2:06:43.

Danielson dominated the boys race, finishing at 24:02 while runner-up John-Mark Pothast of Soldotna was third at 25:32, Soldotna’s Jeremy Kupferschmid was third at 26:02 and Homer’s Jacob Davis was fourth at 26:04.

The Stars cruised to the team title, beating Homer by almost five minutes.
