Tuesday: Danielson leads locals at Junior Nationals

Kenai Central senior Karl Danielson finished 90th out of 132 racers in the men’s classic interval start race Tuesday in Soldier Hollow, Utah, site of the 2018 Junior Nationals cross-country skiing championships.

Danielson finished 4 minutes, 45 seconds, behind race winner Ben Ogden of Stratton Mountain School (Vermont), who covered the 10-kilometer course in 23:01. Gus Schumacher of Service High finished second as the top Alaskan, 14.4 seconds behind Ogden. Danielson was 34th out of 45 in his age class, Under-20 Junior Men.

In the women’s 5K classic interval start race, Kenai senior Addison Gibson was 47th out of 112 racers, two minutes behind race winner Waverly Gebhardt of Steamboat Springs (Colorado), who won in a time of 15:10. West High skier Molly Gellert finished third, 2.6 seconds behind, as the top Alaskan women. Gibson finished 36th out of 80 in her age group, Under-18 Junior Women.
