The West Valley boys soccer team defeated Kenai Central 2-0 on Thursday in nonconference soccer action at The Dome in Anchorage. The same two teams met in the semifinals of the state tournament last season, with West Valley also winning 2-0 in that contest.

Kardinals coach Joel Reemtsma said the team had only been in a gym so far this year, so he was encouraged by the way the squad played. The Kardinals gave up a goal five minutes into the game, then conceded again shortly into the second half.

The Kenai coach said West Valley won the possession battle, and by that measure the Wolfpack deserved to win the game. But Reemtsma added that the Kards probably matched West Valley on solid scoring chances.

The coach said the team was a bit short-handed, but freshmen James Baisden, Aidan Milburn and Leif Lofquist did a great job in their first game.
