SoHi’s Books to compete for top collegiate shotgun shooting team

Soldotna senior Emily Books has signed her national letter of intent to attend Midland University in Freemont, Nebraska, and be a member of the shotgun shooting team.

Midland has one of the best shotgun shooting programs in the country, having just finished third at the Association of College Unions International Division I National Championships, held March 26 to 31. Midland had won the championships last season and finished second the year before.

Midland’s coach is Bret Erickson, a four-time Olympian and former coach of the United States National Shooting Sports Team. The Midland program specializes in trap, skeet, sporting clays and 5-stand.

At 11, Books started shooting with the Peninsula Shooting Stars and coaches Jim Trujillo and Stu Goldstein. Books is a three-time Alaska state champion in trap, skeet and sporting clays. Earlier this year, Books competed at an ACUI event in Boise, Idaho, and brought home medals in all four of her events, helping Alaska win the team trophy.
