Norris wins Kenai Senior Open

The Kenai Golf Course got some much needed rain this past weekend. The greens, fairways, and tee boxes perked up and got even greener. The slit seeding we did last week is really paying dividends after this nice warm rain. Great playing conditions! The tee boxes will get a good dose of fertilizer this week, as well as the greens.

The new senior tee box on #2 will be under construction next week. It will be an elevated tee just to the right of the current tee location. It is sure to provide an interesting tee shot from that position. The newly complete senior tee box on #13 has sprouted. Thank you, Jerry Norris, for your continued hard work on this tee box. Jerry is also in the process of removing the beetle kill trees from the golf course. The new tee box on hole #10 is now in play and looking very good. Thank you for your positive feedback.

The Kenai Peninsula Senior Open was a big success this past weekend. It featured great competition and excellent playing conditions. The rain held off just long enough on Sunday for everyone to complete their final round. Saturday was warm and sunny.

Jerry Norris and Kirk Hyman tied for low net at the two day event with scores of 136. Jerry won on the first play off hole. Bill Davis finished third with a 139. Bill also finished third in the Morgan Memorial Tournament. I had originally stated that he finished fourth in that tournament. Rene Alvarez and Keith Steward tied for fourth place with net scores of 140. Rene won on the first playoff hole, and Keith finished in fifth place. Saturday, closest to the pin on hole #5 was won by Charlie Rehder with a great shot of 4’11”. Rene Alvarez won hole #9 with an equally great shot of 9”2”. Hole #14 was won by Gordon Griffin with a shot of 10’1”. Skins on Saturday were won by Jerry Norris (two skins), Rene Alvarez (two skins), Charlie Rehder (one skin), and Bobby Bush (one skin). On Sunday, closest to the pin on hole #5 was won by John Gipson with a shot of 30’7”. Mike Kebschull won hole #9 with 21’6”. Keith Stewart won hole #10 with a shot of 10’5”. Hole #14 was won by Bobby Bush with 12’5”. On Sunday there was only 1 skin won and that was won by Keith Stewart on hole #2. Lucky, lucky, lucky!!! The low gross champion was Gordon Griffin with a gross score of 158.

Senior League, July 10: Low gross was won by Noel Widmayer with a great score of 38. Keith Stewart won low net with a score of 33. There was a tie for most fairways hit with Dwight Kramer and Gary Brumley. Each hit 6 fairways. Closest to the pin on hole #5 was won by Skip Dove with a shot of 32’-1/2”. Skins were won by Jesse Wade on #4, and Bill Davis with a great eagle on #8. Other notable net scores include Pat Bowen and Bill Davis with 35’s, and Craig Jung and Skip Dove with 37’s.

Senior League is held every Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. All seniors are welcome.

Ladies Night is Tuesdays at 6 p.m. All ladies, regardless of experience, are welcome to play in this scramble event. Lara Griffin is the organizer.

We are getting more requests for ladies’ and junior clinics. The next ladies’ instruction runs July 16 to 18, 6 to 8 p.m. It is a beginner clinic but we know women who have enjoyed taking it several times. It’s a great way to meet new golfing friends. The next junior clinic is July 23 to 25, 10 a.m. to noon. All kids ages 7 to 14 are invited. Call 283-7500 or visit the clubhouse to sign up.
