The Fairbanks Ice Dogs started the season by taking a pair of games from the Kenai River Brown Bears on Friday and Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center in North American Hockey League play. Friday, the Dogs notched a 5-1 victory in front of 661 fans.

Mike Crawford and Susan Craig won the Tustumena 5K Fun Run in Kasilof on Saturday. The race benefits special activities at Tustumena School. Crawford finished in 20 minutes, 18 seconds, to beat the 23:15 of runner-up Ryan Kapp.

Staff report The Kodiak girls and boys swimming and diving teams swept visiting Kenai on Friday and Saturday. Friday, the Kodiak girls notched a 72-39 victory, while the boys meet saw Kodiak blue score 48, Kodiak gold score 39 and Kenai score 14.

The final stock car races of the season will be Saturday at noon at Twin Cities Raceway. The gates open at 10 a.m., while qualifying is at 11 a.m. There will be racing in stock cars, Sprints, Legends, trucks and Late Models, depending on participants.
