So much has happened since the last column, both in football, and in life. December 21st came and passed without any epic disasters of note. Disappointing, considering the History Channel had spent millions on producing various Armageddon programs.

The Soldotna Stars had the upper hand in the Kenai-SoHi Hockey Alumni Game last Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center, defeating Kenai 8-4 in front of a crowd of over 400 fans.

In most sports and classifications in Alaska, it's hard to duplicate many of the state experiences in the Lower 48, where over a hundred schools compete for the state title. That's not the case in Class 1A basketball.

The Soldotna girls basketball team won its second tournament of the young season by defeating Palmer 58-55 for the Lady T-Bird Classic title in Anchorage on Saturday. The Stars were pushed harder than they have been all season by the Moose.

Homer's Barae Hirsch led the Kenai Peninsula at the first Besh Cup races of the season, held Saturday in Anchorage. The races were classic 1.2-kilometer sprints. Hirsch won the Junior 3 race with a time of 2 minutes, 32.94 seconds.

Teammates Michael Hoo and Alex Michaels have committed to the Oilers for the 2013 season. Cal Poly is the school that the 2011 Alaska Baseball League MVP Mike Miller attended. Miller is currently playing minor league baseball for the Boston Red Sox.
