Following Nikolaevsk School's end-of-the-year awards assembly on May 19, the students, faculty, staff and a scattering of parents were asked to stay seated. There was one more recognition in store.

The Caveman 5K was held Friday at Tsalteshi Trails. Shoes were optional. Derek Gibson, finishing in 18 minutes, 33 seconds, was the top finisher for the men, while Katie Franzmann, at 22:09, paced all the women.

The Palmer softball team pushed a run across in the top of the seventh inning to top host Soldotna in nonconference action Friday. The Stars led 2-1 after the first inning, but the Moose grabbed a 6-2 lead after two innings.

Soldotna sophomore Joey Becher threw strikes - well, for the most part - and let his defense take care of the rest. Becher pitched the Stars to a 4-1 win over Palmer on Friday in Northern Lights Conference play at the Soldotna Little League fields.
