The Cook Inlet Academy girls and boys won Peninsula Conference crowns Friday at Kenai Central High School. For the girls, it's the 3rd-straight title. Both teams also earned berths to the Class 2A state tournament.
The Brown Bears defeated the Alaska Avalanche of Palmer 5-4 in a shootout Friday at the Soldotna Sports Center. The victory moves the Bears two points ahead of the Fresno Monsters in the playoff race. Matt Thompson had two goals for the Bears, while Brett Lubanski had three assists.
The Seward girls defeated ACS for the Southcentral Conference title Friday, while the ACS boys also won a Southcentral crown. The Seward boys and Nikiski girls won in the second-place bracket to stay alive for a state berth, while the Nikiski boys saw their season end.
The Soldotna girls qualified for state by defeating Kodiak 44-24 in the NLC semifinals. The Kenai boys lost to Colony 53-43 in the semis. In other boys action, Skyview topped Homer and Palmer topped SoHi. Also on the girls side, Kenai defeated Skyview and Palmer topped Homer.
The Cook Inlet Academy boys managed to fend off a third-quarter charge from Nikolaevsk to advance to the championship game of the Peninsula Conference basketball tournament with a 62-52 win Thursday night at CIA.
Senior Jared Turner grabbed a pair of steals and a rebound, and senior Blake Hightower collected three points and two rebounds during extra time, to help the Colony boys score a 62-53 overtime win over the Soldotna Stars in the first round of the Northern Lights Conference Championships at Wasilla High School, and freshman Faith Farris scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Knights to a 30-27 win over the Kenai Kardinals during the NLC Championships quarterfinals on Thursday.
