The Soldotna girls basketball team won its second tournament of the young season by defeating Palmer 58-55 for the Lady T-Bird Classic title in Anchorage on Saturday. The Stars were pushed harder than they have been all season by the Moose.

Homer's Barae Hirsch led the Kenai Peninsula at the first Besh Cup races of the season, held Saturday in Anchorage. The races were classic 1.2-kilometer sprints. Hirsch won the Junior 3 race with a time of 2 minutes, 32.94 seconds.

Teammates Michael Hoo and Alex Michaels have committed to the Oilers for the 2013 season. Cal Poly is the school that the 2011 Alaska Baseball League MVP Mike Miller attended. Miller is currently playing minor league baseball for the Boston Red Sox.

Kenai Central's Kirsten Nyquist and Jordan Theisen won the Candy Cane Scramble on Thursday at Tsalteshi Trails. The race was a 7.5-kilometer mass start, with the girls starting just a minute after the boys.

The Kenai Central basketball team notched a 60-41 nonconference victory over host Skyview on Thursday. The Kards had a 19-8 lead after the first quarter. Shane Spalding scored eight points in that first quarter en route to a game-high 18.
