It had been 25 years since the Homer Mariners had a girls basketball team appear in a state championship game, and a semifinal win Friday changed that. As for the state crown itself, well, that'll have to wait another year.

The Oilers are once again offering college scholarships to area graduating seniors. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded by the Peninsula Oilers Baseball Club, Inc., to a graduating senior from either Kenai Central, Soldotna or Nikiski high schools.

Kenai River Brown Bears defenseman Jake Hartje came here for hockey experience. He ended up getting a bit of the Alaska experience as well. Hartje, 19, committed to play hockey at Division I Harvard as a senior at Detroit Country Day School.
