Six teams in the Alaska high school hockey's North Star Conference will begin their quest for supremacy within the week, but some of them might have an easier time of doing it.

The Kenai River Brown Bears continue to look for ways to turn around a 1-13-0 start to the North American Hockey League season as the Aston (Pennsylvania) Rebels come to town today and Saturday. The puck drops on both nights at 7:30 p.m.

Staff report Peninsula Clarion The Homer volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over Nikiski in Southcentral Conference action Tuesday evening in Homer, with game scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-18.

Sean Goff, Michelle Mitchell and Sammy Anders were the winners at the 5K Costume Run, held Saturday in Nikiski. Goff was the first men's finisher, crossing the line at 22 minutes, 20 seconds. Jason Warfle was runner-up at 32:11.

Chainwreck Cyclocross Race 3 was held Thursday at Tsalteshi Trails, with Marc Romano, Jessie Donahue and Ellie Mitchell notching the victories. In cyclocross, racers do as many laps as possible on a relatively short course.

South Anchorage won the Homer Round Robin Rumble in Homer on Saturday, scoring 267.5 points to top the 178.5 of runner-up Homer. Houston was third with 141, Soldotna was fourth with 112, Nikiski was fifth with 57.5, Voznesenka was sixth with 38.

The Nikiski, Homer and Seward football squads filled the small-schools Peninsula All-Conference teams list for 2015, which was released after the small-schools championship decider Oct. 17 between Nikiski and Eielson high schools.

The Kenai Central volleyball team was fourth in the Gold Bracket, while Soldotna was fifth, at the Dimond-Service Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Anchorage.

After a prolonged road trip that finally brought the Kenai River Brown Bears home for the first time since Sept. 12, hopes of snapping a growing winless streak were quickly extinguished Friday night at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.
