Ringed seal released by Alaska SeaLife Center

Lacy, a 40-pound ringed seal was returned home to the waters off Egegik Beach on the Alaska Peninsula Dec. 21.

She had spent the past 2 1/2 months at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, where she was recovering from a fungal skin infection.

Prior to her release, a satellite tracking tag was attached to her back that will allow staff at the center to follow her movements for the next few months. Information about Lucy's travels will be posted to the center's Web site.

Navy reunion planned

The United States Navy Reunion Group is planning its annual reunion for the Asheville and Tacoma Class Navy Patrol Gunboats. Original records indicate that some crew members were from the Kenai area. The Asheville Gunboats were authorized to respond to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The reunion will be held Aug. 8 through 12 in San Diego.
