ANCHORAGE (AP) -- An 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted Saturday night by a man who gave her a ride as she walked along a downtown street, Anchorage police said Monday.

The woman was walking on Fourth Avenue at about 9 p.m. on her way to find a friend to give her a ride home when a van pulled up, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said.

The driver asked her for a lighter and then offered her a ride. After the woman accepted, they picked up a bottle of liquor and drove around town drinking, Shell said.

When the woman began to feel the effects of the alcohol, she went to the back of the van to lie down. The man followed her into the back and sexually assaulted her, Shell said.

After the assault, the woman left the van and ran to restaurant, where she asked employees to call police. The call came in at 1:21 a.m. Sunday.

The man was described as a 20-year-old black male with a gap in the right side of his front teeth. The van was an off-white or tan older vehicle, possibly a 1983 or 1984 Dodge.
