Longtime Alaska resident Jane Delores Flegel died in Sun City, Ariz., Monday, Nov. 25, 2002. She was 80.

A celebration of her life will be held later in Kenai.

Mrs. Flegel was born in Racine, Wis., on Feb. 3, 1922. She was among the original colonists to settle the Matanuska Valley along with her parents, Joe and Zuleika Lentz, and family. They homesteaded on Bodenberg Loop Road, also known as the Butte area.

She enjoyed oil painting, ceramics, knitting and crocheting and had a passion for baking bread and rolls. She and Rudy spent many winters traveling the continental United States, visiting relatives and friends and making new and lasting friendships.

She was a lifelong member of the Moose and Elks clubs. Her grandchildren will long remember her stories recalling events from her childhood. In latter years, she became an avid golfer.

"We will remember her as a loving, caring person with a beautiful smile and charming personality. She leaves behind many handmade treasures that she constantly made as gifts for any and all occasions, which will keep her memory alive for generations to come," her family said.
