Cardiac support group to meet

The Cardiac Patient Support Group meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of each month in the Redoubt Room, located in the lower level at Central Peninsula Hospital. The group invites male and female patients dealing with heart disease and their family members to participate. Writer mini-grants available

The Central Peninsula Writers Group is now calling for submissions for the 14th Annual Writers presentation in March, 2011, at the Kenai Visitors Center in Kenai. The Central Peninsula Writers Group is very pleased to announce they have been awarded a mini-grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum to enable them to give those who read their entries this year an honorarium of up to $100. The amount will be determined by the number of readers selected from the submissions received.

Adult and high school aged writers from the Central Peninsula: Cooper Landing to Ninilchik and Nikiski; are eligible to enter. Entries are due Feb. 12, 2011, and must be accompanied by an entry form and three copies of their work.

Youth volleyball on tap

North Peninsula Recreation is offering Youth Volleyball registration for boys and girls 4th -- 6th grade. Register through Jan. 7 at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center or the Nikiski Pool. For more information contact Tammy at 776-8800.

Fish and Game ACs meet in January

* The Central Peninsula Fish and Game Advisory Committee meets Jan. 4, at 7 p.m., at Ninilchik School, to continue preparing comment on Upper Cook Inlet Board of Fish proposals. The Central Peninsula committee will hold an election meeting Jan. 19, at the Ninilchik School at 7 p.m. Also on the agenda will be Board of Game proposal comments. * The Kenai/Soldotna Fish and Game Advisory Committee meets Jan. 5, Jan. 12 and Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m., at CIAA building on Kalifornsky Beach Road, to prepare comments for Upper Cook Inlet Board of Fish proposals. The Kenai/Soldotna advisory committee holds an election meeting Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m., at the Soldotna Sports Center. Also on the agenda will be Board of Fish/Board of Game proposals. * The Seward Fish and Game Advisory Committee meets Jan. 20, at 7 p.m., at Seward City Council chambers. * The Cooper Landing Fish and Game Advisory Committee meets Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Community building to discuss Upper Cook Inlet fisheries proposals. If necessary, the meeting will continue on Jan. 8. On Jan. 21 the committee meets at 3 p.m., at the Community Building in order to prepare comments on Southcentral region game proposals and hold elections. Art guild has annual meeting

The Peninsula Art Guild annual board meeting for members, artists and the community will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at the Kenai Fine Art Center, 816 Cook Ave., Old Towne Kenai, from 2 to 4 p.m. The Guild is looking for new board members, new programs and ideas. Brain injury group invites call-ins

Alaska Brain Injury Network holds its winter board meeting in Ketchikan on Jan. 19 -- 20, at the Cape Fox Lodge. We will be hosting a community social event and public testimony on Jan. 19. The social event will begin at 5 p.m., with public testimony beginning at 5:30 p.m. Call in and share your Traumatic Brain Injury experience with us; tell us what works and what doesn't work in Alaska's care system. New class sessions starting at Challenger

The Challenger Learning Center is offering new sessions of its S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Aviation, Math) Ahead continuous curriculum for K-8th grade. Some of the new topics are: "Forces in Motion," "Moving with Magnets," "Water Cycle," "Alaskan Land Features," "Earthquakes and Volcanoes" and more! Parents can learn with their children or let them work independently with Challenger center teachers. The next session starts Jan. 4, 2011, so get signed up now! Cost is $149 for three classes.
