RALEIGH, N.C. -- Bill Guerin scored two goals, and Glen Murray added one in the opening 12 minutes as the Boston Bruins used a four-goal first period to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 6-3 Wednesday night.
The only bright spot for the Hurricanes in the first period was Ron Francis' 500th career goal. The Carolina captain became the fifth player in NHL history to reach 500 goals and 1,000 assists.
The Bruins have won six of seven to move into first place in the Eastern Conference.

DALLAS -- Mike Modano scored on the power play to become the fourth United States-born player to reach 400 NHL goals as Dallas beat Atlanta.
Joe Nieuwendyk's power-play goal with 9:08 remaining snapped a 1-1 tie.
Atlanta, which got a goal from Tony Hrkac, is 2-10-3 in its last 15 games.
Red Wings 5, Mighty Ducks 3
DETROIT -- Brendan Shanahan scored two power-play goals, and Luc Robitaille and Mathieu Dandenault each had one as Detroit hung on to beat Anaheim.
Trailing 4-1, Anaheim rallied in the third period on goals by Oleg Tverdovsky and Marc Chouinard and had another nullified by a whistle.
The Mighty Ducks are 0-8-1 in their last nine games in Detroit.
Detroit captain Steve Yzerman, in his first game back after missing three because of a lower left leg bruise, assisted on Dandenault's goal and Shanahan's second.
Wild 2, Lightning 0
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Dwayne Roloson turned away 36 shots to lift Minnesota over Tampa Bay.
Marian Gaborik scored his team-leading 16th goal as the Wild snapped a three-game losing streak and posted their first win in six games. Darby Hendrickson also scored for the Wild.
Oilers 4, Rangers 1
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Sean Brown had the first two-goal game of his career as Edmonton, boosted by Ryan Smyth's surprise return from injury, beat the New York Rangers.
Jason Smith and Anson Carter added third-period insurance goals for the Oilers, who are 3-1-1 in their last five.
Radek Dvorak had the lone goal for the Rangers, losers of two straight after a three-game winning streak.
Smyth returned after missing 21 games with a fractured right ankle. He was expected to be out up to 12 weeks, but was back after just seven.
Sharks 5, Flyers 2
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Gary Suter's 200th career goal proved to be the game-winner as San Jose snapped its longest winless streak of the season.
Owen Nolan added a goal and two assists as the Sharks beat Philadelphia at home for the first time in seven meetings.
Adam Graves, Scott Thornton and Todd Harvey also scored for the Sharks, 0-4-1 in their previous five games. San Jose also snapped a three-game home losing streak.
Kings 3, Panthers 1
LOS ANGELES -- Jason Allison and Mikko Eloranta scored six minutes apart as Los Angeles beat Florida.
It was the second time Allison and Eloranta scored in the same game since the Oct. 24 trade that sent them from Boston to Los Angeles.
Allison, who also set up a third-period goal by Adam Deadmarsh, leads the Kings with 30 points.
Rookie Kristian Huselius scored his team-high 15th goal for Florida.
