Area players help Valley City State
Three players from the central peninsula were on the Valley City State University football team that won its 25th conference title this year. Travis McGahan of Nikiski, Jonathan Anderson of Nikiski and Dakota Craig of Kenai were all part of the team that ruled the Dakota Athletic Conference.
The Vikings won a share of the conference championship with a 6-1 conference record and a 7-3 overall record. Valley City State finished the year ranked 22nd in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll while just missing out on the national playoffs by losing to No. 10 Azusa Pacific 34-31.
Verhelst plays football for Augustana
Soldotna High School graduate Jon Verhelst was a sophomore offensive lineman on the Augustana College football team this year. Augustana is located in Rock Island, Ill. The Vikings finished 10-2 this season, losing to Mount Union in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Hall completes 11th NFL season
Travis Hall, who was born and raised in Kenai, completed his 11th NFL season Sunday as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Houston Texans 20-17. Hall, who plays on the defensive line, had 12 tackles, six assists and 0.5 sacks for the 49ers this season.
