Archangels take down SkyHi boys

Posted: Sunday, January 04, 2004

The Skyview High School boys basketball team dropped a nonregion game Saturday, losing 50-47 to Lumen Christi in an endowment game at Skyview.

Also Saturday, the Skyview girls ran away with a big win, defeating the visiting Archangels 71-17.

Endowment games are played as fund-raiser for the Alaska Endowment for Youth Activities. Playing an endowment game allows each team to have an extra game on its schedule, and the games do not count toward a team's season record.

In the boys game, Skyview led for most of the way. The Panthers were up by a point, 9-8, after the first quarter and led by two, 21-19, at the half.

Lumen Christi did keep it interesting throughout the half, tying the score at 15 on a 3-pointer by Nick Petrella with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Skyview was able to maintain an advantage to open the third quarter, but the Panthers started having trouble with the Archangels half-court trapping defense. The third quarter ended with the score knotted at 30, and Lumen Christi went on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter.

Skyview's Ryan Geller ended the run with a 3-pointer, and after a two-point basket by Lumen Christi's Adam Brauner, Geller hit another trey to cut the Panthers' deficit to six.

The Archangels's lead swelled to 11 points, 47-36, on a 3-pointer and another two-point basket before Skyview was able to rattle off nine straight points, pulling to within two as Zack Rowell hit a pair of technical foul free throws with a minute to play.

Lumen Christi's defense came up with a turnover on Skyview's ensuing possession, though, forcing the Panthers to foul to stop the clock.

The Archangels' Noah Brauner, shooting double-bonus free throws, made three of four foul shots in the closing minute to ice the win. Skyview's Cody Hatfield hit a layup at the buzzer, but the game was already decided.

Noah Brauner led the Archangels with 20 points, Jonas Musgrave netted 12 and Adam Brauner scored 10.

Ryan Geller led the Panthers with 16 points while Garrett St. Clair scored nine.

In the girls game, Skyview led from the start. Anna Blake netted 20 points for the Panthers, Shelley Heffner scored 14 and Cassie Dreifuerst scored 12.

Shannon Craig led Lumen Christi with seven points.
