Happy New Year from Kasilof.

Hopefully, you and yours had a nice holiday, and the new year is off to a great start.

Students are back in school, and it's back to the grind for those of us who were fortunate enough to enjoy a little vacation.

Like many, I've spent a few days shoveling and cleaning up the piles of wind-driven snow deposited in high, hard to reach places on my roof last week.

This was a job better left to Fritz, my dear and fearless husband. Since I don't "do" ladders, I procured a roof-rake last Tuesday and went to work putting it together that afternoon. When I finished the assembly I took my position and went at pulling the drifts on the roof toward me.

If you can, make sure it's not going to be windy when you do this. I also should mention that roof-rakes are 17 feet long and weigh about 4 pounds, which after an hour of overhead pulling, lifting and raising equals one or more tons. Needless to say, I am still feeling the burn, and I might be finished by the time you read this.

The Kasilof Public Library resumed its regular winter hours this week, which are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. We are inside Tustumena Elementary School.

Library cards at the library are free, and if it's a "book to own" instead of a "book to loan" that you're interested in, be sure to check out the book sale cart stacked with 25 cent bargains. The library has Kasilof's only public Internet access, many books on tape, a selection of large print books and new VHS tapes for loan. For any information about the library, call 252-1120 between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays.

Celebrating her birthday this week is Clam Gulch resident Jan Casey. Kasilof folks celebrating a birthday this week are Austin Knodel, Austin is 1 today. Also happy birthday to Trudy Tisdale and to Cloe Milbauer, who turns 4 Thursday.

Thanks to those who read the column and to those who send in their news, events and announcements, I appreciate it. Thank you.

Have a groovy day.
