Writers’ night needs authors

Submissions are being accepted for the 10th annual Central Kenai Peninsula Writers’ Night, put on by the Central Peninsula Writers Group, to be held March 10 at Triumvirate Theatre in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna. Submission forms and rules are available at Kenai Community Library, the Triumvirate Bookstore and online at kenailibrary.org. Entries should be returned to the Kenai library or mailed to V. Walters at 214 Birch St., Kenai, AK 99611. The deadline is Jan. 26.

Authors are allowed to enter no more than two pieces each of fiction or nonfiction that can be read in 10 minutes or poetry not to exceed 100 lines. Each writer should submit three copies of their entries with an entry form. The author’s name should not appear on the entry.

Kids’ reading program launched

Triumvirate Bookstore in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna invites kids to join its Winter Frequent Reading Program.

When kids sign up at the bookstore, they can pick out one free book, a reading calendar and reading program rules. Kids are encouraged to read a book, bring their reading calendar to the bookstore, get it punched and pick up another free book.

Bookstore hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, call Rosie Reeder at 262-2908.

Art contest offers tech toys

A “Jobs are Alaska’s Future” art contest is being held with the theme “where the jobs are in Alaska in the future.” Guidelines are as follows: Posters must by 8 1/2 by 11 inches, created by hand (digital images may be applied but artwork must be done by hand) and created individually (no collaborative projects). Posters may be done in any medium and are due at the Peninsula Job Center in Kenai by Feb. 1.

Prizes will be awarded at the 2007 Job Fair on March 29. Prizes are an iPod for first place, thumb drive for second and Blockbuster gift card for third.

Poetry Out Loud open to schools

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation present Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, a program that encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

From October through March, schools are invited to participate in classroom and schoolwide contests, advancing to a state competition March 12. State champions will advance to the national finals, to take place April 30 and May 1 in Washington, D.C. Winners receive scholarships and money for their school.

High schools that wish to be part of the Poetry Out Loud program should contact the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Home-school students should coordinate with local high schools to participate. Almanac looking for writers

The Old Farmer’s Almanac is taking submissions for its 2007 essay contest: “The Best Thing I Ever Bought at a Yard Sale.”

Entries should be no longer than 200 words and submitted to essaycontest@yankeepub. com by Jan. 26. Winners will be announced in The 2008 Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Seward hosts race to design

The Seward Chamber of Commerce is holding an artwork design contest for the 2007 Mount Marathon Race/Fourth of July festivities logo. The chosen design may be reproduced on T-shirts, hats, pin, patches and/or posters.

The design must fit on an 8-by-11 sheet of paper, preferably be round, have only four colors and must include the following: Mt. Marathon Race; July 4, 2007; 80th Running; Seward, Alaska; the words “finisher” or “survivor”; and a mountain theme.

The deadline is March 1. Artwork must be signed by the artist. All submissions become property of the Seward Chamber of Commerce, with credit given to the artist. For more information, call the chamber at 224-8051 or e-mail events@seward.net.
