SoHi tops Eielson

The Soldotna High School boys basketball team finished out the ACS Pepsi Invitational with a big win, coming from behind to defeat Eielson 60-56 Saturday in the consolation championship game at Anchorage Christian Schools.

Also Saturday, the Homer girls team defeated the host Lions 58-39 in the third-place game while the Seward Seahawks dropped a two-point decision, 59-57, to Barrow in the third-place game.

The Stars trailed 36-23 at the half, and had only cut into that lead by one point after the third period. Soldotna outscored the Ravens 24-6 in the closing period, though, to come away with the win.

Cody Michal led the Stars with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, while Tommy Turnbull poured in 14 points and Caleb Sizemore struck for 13.

The Seward boys climbed back from a 38-25 halftime deficit. The Seahawks trailed by eight, 48-40, after three quarters, and outscored the Whalers 17-11 in the fourth quarter, coming up just short.

Bart Elhard led the Seahawks with 20 points while Jonah Swiderski scored 18. Seth Price chipped in with 11 points.

The Homer girls were tied with ACS at seven after the first quarter of play, but broke the game open with a 19-8 run in the second quarter.

Channing Setterquist led the Mariners with 15 points while Chantrell Cousins netted 10.

Both the Homer girls and Seward boys lost in the semifinals Friday.

The Mariners dropped a 65-53 decision to Eielson. Janay Deloach had 20 points for the Ravens, while Alison Teague had 11 points. Channing Setterquist paced Homer with 19 points.

The Seward boys absorbed a 80-32 defeat at the hands of Valdez. Mark Banner had a banner evening for the Buccaneers, pumping in 25 points. Bart Elhard paced Seward with 13 points.

Also Friday, the Soldotna boys moved into the consolation final with a 69-55 victory over Kotzebue. The Stars carried a 53-48 advantage into the final period, then outscored the Huskies 16-7 in the final eight minutes.

Cody Michal paced a balanced attack for Soldotna with 18 points. Also for the Stars, Tommy Turnbull, Caleb Sizemore and Ricky Simpson had 13 points apiece.

David Lambert had 24 points for Kotzebue, while Spencer Shroyer added 16.
