Fort Lewis man notes correction

Posted: Wednesday, January 05, 2005

The story, "Mom wishes for respect, safe return for son at war; Woman plans to start support group for parents of soldiers," by Victoria Steik, noted that Spc Tommie Alley had completed "boot camp" at Fort Lewis (in Washington state.)

Just FYI and possible future application, the term "boot camp" really has a U.S. Marine Corps connotation. The Army conducts "basic combat training" (BCT) and "advanced individual training" (AIT) to prepare new soldiers for their duties. Fort Lewis does not conduct either BCT or AIT, however, and has not since 1972. It is currently home to the two existing Stryker-based brigades, which are sister units to the 172nd SBCT now training up at Fort Wainwright (Alaska).

Thanks for your coverage of our soldiers in Mosul.

Dick Devlin, Fort Lewis, Wash.
