The Sterling Highway is closed around mile 62 after a fatal collision this afternoon near the access to Kelly and Peterson Lakes.
A Subaru and a Dodge truck collided north of Sterling sometime after 12:30 this afternoon, said Megan Peters, spokeswoman for the Alaska State Troopers.
The highway will probably be closed until at least 7 p.m., Peters said.
Traffic may be diverted onto side roads earlier in the evening, depending on whether or not a sanding truck can get to the scene to reduce the ice on the side roads.
Peters said the troopers did not immediately know what caused the collision.
"I don't know the cause or contributing factors," she said.
The driver of the Subaru was ejected and died on the scene. The truck driver was injured but the injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening, Peters said. Names have not been released.
