Grouse Society to hold kick-off meeting

The south central Alaska chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Officers will be elected and committees organized for the upcoming year.

Board to consider peninsula fishing

The Federal Subsistence Board will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Tuesday through Jan. 12 at the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel, 401 E. Sixth Ave. in Anchorage.

The board will consider proposals to change federal subsistence fisheries regulations for the 2006-07 year, including a proposal that would establish a customary and traditional use determination for rural residents of the Cook Inlet area.

The proposal would enable residents of Ninilchik, Cooper Landing and Hope to harvest fish for subsistence use in federal public waters of the Kenai Peninsula.

The public is invited to the meetings.

Refuge closed to snowmachines

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is closed to snowmachine use due to insufficient snow. Snowmachine use will be authorized by announcement through the newspaper and radio.

Arctic preservation campaign seeks donations

The Penny Campaign, a campaign opposed to drilling in the Alaska Wildlife Refuge, is collecting donations.

Refuge sponsors birding hotline

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is sponsoring a hotline for rare or interesting bird sightings. If you have spotted a rare bird or would like to hear what other bird watchers have seen recently, call 262-2300.

Trail Advisory Board meeting

The Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation will meet Jan. 27, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The meeting will be held in suite 240 of the Robert B. Atwood Building at 550 W. 7th Ave. in Anchorage.

Board members will approve the priority list for 2006 Land and Water Conservation Fund proposals, score and recommend funding for 2006 Recreational Trail Program grants and additional uses of Recreational Trails Program funds.
