Ninilchik sweeps Eagles

The Ninilchik boys defeated defending Class 2A state champion Cook Inlet Academy 73-62 Thursday in the Cook Inlet Classic at Cook Inlet Academy.

The Wolverines used a huge fourth quarter to notch the victory during the first day of the three-day, round-robin tournament. The Eagles held a 48-42 lead after three quarters, but Ninilchik erupted for 31 points in the final quarter and Cook Inlet Academy could not keep up.

Mike Skrypjyk paced the Wolverines with 23 points, including eight in the final quarter. Jesse Leman added 21 points, including 11 in the final quarter. Finally, Austin Vanderford had 18 points, 10 of which came in the final quarter.

All those offensive fireworks were enough to offset Cook Inlet Academy’s Jeremy Franchino, who finished with 34 points. Nate Byrd added 10 points for the Eagles.

In the girls game, Ninilchik played stifling defense in picking up a 44-17 victory. Kendra Moerlein paced the Wolverines with 18 points, while Melissa Moffis had 11 points for the Eagles.

In other boys action, the Bristol Bay boys defeated the North Pole junior varsity 52-37. In other girls action, the Bristol Bay girls defeated the North Pole junior varsity 57-27.

The tournament concludes today and Saturday. Today, the Ninilchik girls face Bristol Bay at 3:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s Class 2A state championship game, which was won by Bristol Bay. Other games are the Ninilchik boys against Bristol Bay at 5:15 p.m., the CIA girls against North Pole JV at 7 p.m. and the CIA boys against North Pole JV at 8:45 p.m.

Saturday, the Ninilchik girls face North Pole JV at 11 a.m., the Ninilchik boys face North Pole JV at 12:45 p.m., the CIA girls face Bristol Bay at 2:30 p.m. and the CIA boys face Bristol Bay at 4:15 p.m.
