Nikiski community made Christmas cheer

Posted: Friday, January 07, 2011

It was truly amazing to see the overwhelming generosity of the Nikiski community poured out this Christmas through the Nikiski Neighbors program and the Outreach Council.

The Nikiski Homemakers and people from North Star United Methodist Church baked sweet breads. Nikiski Middle School, Nikiski North Star Elementary school, the Nikiski Senior Center, and North Peninsula Recreation Center each held canned food drives which brought in over 1,000 pounds of food all to benefit 115 families in Nikiski with Christmas food boxes.

Red boxes were placed in Nikiski area business and gathered in over $1,600. The businesses who had red boxes were Lamplight Bar, Steve's Chevron, Nikiski Hardware, Nikiski Fire Stations 1 and 2, the Hunger Hut, M&M Market, La Casa Italiana, Treehouse Restaurant, Charlie's Pizza, Nikiski Senior Center, Nikiski Post Office, Stop N Go, Bare Threads, Tesoro 2 Go, and The Place. A huge thank you goes out to each of these businesses.

The Homemakers, the Senior Center, Nikiski North Star Elementary School, Enstar, Nikiski Clubhouse (B&G Club), and Tesoro Refinery all adopted families from the 48 who were helped this year through Nikiski Neighbors. The Christmas Tree at M&M Market held the snowmen for the children so that area people could shop for these children who are so in need. Thanks goes to Mike Sweeney of Sweeney's Clothing, Steve at Beemuns, and Dr. Wortham for their generosity.

Women from Tesoro Refinery and North Star United Methodist did the final shopping for those snowmen that were not picked up from the tree. In all, 120 children were blessed with presents that they would not have had without the generosity of all those participating through Nikiski Neighbors. An extra-special thank you goes out to Brenda Bowlin and Ann Holloway who both went above and beyond in helping with Nikiski Neighbors this year. A great thank you goes out to the community of Nikiski for pouring out such tremendous generosity this year. You're awesome!
