Longtime Homer resident Carolyn Roy Turkington died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at Friendship Terrace Assisted Living in Homer with her family by her side. She was 83.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at the Bidarka Inn, 575 Sterling Highway in Homer.

Mrs. Turkington was born March 14, 1926 to Ernest E. and Irene Roy in Manchester, Conn.

Her family wrote, "Carolyn made her trek to Alaska in April of 1949. As a young bride, she, husband Bob, and three other men left Manchester, Connecticut in two 1929 Model A Fords. The trip took them 25 days total and Carolyn and Bob celebrated their first anniversary while on the road. Carolyn and Bob would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary on April 24, 2010."

The young couple spent their first winter in a Wanigan at 8 mile outside of Homer. The next spring they moved into Homer. They were blessed with their first child Alan and a short 11 months later their son Bruce. Two years later their only daughter Gail was born.

Mrs. Turkington helped her husband keep books for the School Bus business of 18 years, earth moving business and commercial fishing. She worked for several years at Inglimas store as a checker. Her greatest joy was her family. Her talents included decorating cakes, painting pictures, cross stitching, crocheting afghans, sewing and gardening. Carolyn loved to cook and excelled at it. She will be remembered for her fine meals and dinner parties that rivaled Julia Child's. Carolyn was a "Lady" and will be remembered for her loving kindness to others.

Her family states, "Mom always encouraged us to do our best and was always there for us; she was the wind beneath our wings. Mom was a gentle spirit and gave to us unselfishly. Carolyn got to watch her 10 grandchildren grow up and loved having them visit. The grandchildren have many fond memories of their Grandma Turkington. We were so blessed to have her with us for 83 years."

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert Turkington of Homer; sons and daughters in-law, Alan and Joyce Turkington of Homer and Bruce and Debbie Turkington of Homer; daughter and son in-law, Gail and Danny Presley of Happy Valley; granddaughters, Joy and her husband, Jason Huffman of Wasilla, Treva Turkington Huff of San Diego, Ashlie Turkington Bishop of Redmond, Wash., Kristin Presley of Anchorage, and Mala and her husband, Vladimir Martushev, of Wasilla; grandsons, Scott and his wife, Hester Turkington of Springfield, Mo., Matt Turkington of Phoenix, Ryan Turkington of Homer, Sean Presley of Soldotna, Daniel and his wife, Randi Presley, of Soldotna; great-grandchildren, Braden, Riley and Kieryn Huffman, all of Wasilla, and Caley, Camron, and Marek Presley, all of Soldotna.
