FAIRBANKS (AP) -- James R. Johnsen, who has been chief of staff for University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton, has been named vice president for faculty and staff relations.

Johnsen replaces Janet Jacobs. He will take over the $130,000 per year position on Jan. 20. He got the job after a nationwide search that netted 135 applications.

Johnsen came to the university in 1996 as labor relations director. Prior to that, he worked for the University of Minnesota, the state of Alaska and the Alaska Public Employees Association. He has also taught at UA Southeast and UA Fairbanks.
