A mobile home and attached lean-to in Sterling were destroyed by fire Monday afternoon. No one was injured in the blaze.
According to Central Emergency Services, the structure was fully involved with fire when the first of eight fire vehicles arrived at about 2:40 p.m. The fire was declared under control within 40 minutes.
Fire investigators determined the fire started in a mattress and was caused by smoking materials.
A neighbor reportedly told investigators that the occupant was seen exiting the home carrying the burning mattress.
While exiting, the person kicked over a container of gasoline, which was then ignited by embers falling from the mattress.
Damage to the structure was estimated at $25,000.
The displaced occupant reportedly is now living with relatives.
